Not even sure where to start – WOW! The last two days have been spectacular and I am in awe at the BEAUTY of God’s creation!!!! We left Minnesota and drove all the way across South Dakota – it was straight and flat for hundreds of miles….
What looks like fog is SMOKE – from the wildfires in Canada! It was crazy!
All of a sudden, the scenery changed totally –especially as we approached our campground near Mount Rushmore…
We stayed at the J-BAR RANCH Campground and all i can say is WOW! – what a beautiful place – you can see where our campsite was – what a view! We got all settled in – AND MADE SURE THE DOOR WOULD OPEN FROM THE INSIDE! – and were so excited to see Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial – I had no idea what to expect!!!
First of all, God blessed us with BEAUTIFUL weather the two days we were here! Clear skies and about 65 degrees!
Approaching Mount Rushmore was so exciting and it did not disappoint! The carving on the mountain is so big and it’s hard to even capture in photos how majestic it is! The carving shows George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln! How awesome and patriotic to look up at their faces and think back on all that they meant to this country – I love that they are immortalized on this mountain! We did a self-guided audio tour and walked the Presidential Trail (6/10 of a mile) that took us almost right UNDER the carving – you will see some of the views in the photos here!
We loved it so much that we went back at night to see them light up the mountain! ENJOY!
One of the best days ever!!!…..
and THEN.….we decided to go to see the Crazy Horse Memorial – I knew NOTHING about it – and now I do! It is a carving that is still under construction – it will show the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse riding a horse and pointing to his tribal land – right now the only thing that is completed is the head and part of his hand…this is what it looks like now and the model of the completed memorial..
Crazy Horse is the world’s largest mountain carving -The elevation on the mountain is 6,532 feet above sea level — the entire carving will be 641 feet long and 563 feet high!!!!!! We took a bus tour and were told that if you were to put George Washington’s head from Mount Rushmore next to Crazy Horse’s head (chin to chin), George Washington’s head would only come up to Crazy Horse’s EYEBROW!!! Now THAT’S big!
We enjoyed it so much and had the same feeling of awe looking at it and realizing what it will be when it’s done! So thankful for the opportunity to be there!
Hope you enjoyed the photos of our experience at Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse – we did ONE other thing that you won’t believe!!!!! I’m going to make you wait…it deserves it’s own post! UNTIL TOMORROW…..
Your pictures are amazing! Especially the ones from under Mt. Rushmore. The earth is filled with His glory!
Great pix. Thx for sharing your awesome trip with us.
Mount Rushmore is awesome. I bet it was so cool to see it up close. Like we talked about just think about Dad telling us they used to climb up or down to the carvings on Stone Mountain…glad Leonard didn’t try to recreate that there. He probably would’ve been arrested…lol.
And the Crazy Horse carving is also cool. Just think…flying wouldn’t let you enjoy all of this.
Amazing and exciting! So glad you are having a Spectacular time!
Wow!! Thank you. On the bucket list for me, not sure about Luigi… 🙂 Terrific pics and description.
There are amazing things to discover up North! I am so glad you are able to take the time to stop and enjoy them. Great pictures and I am glad you had good weather to these amazing American landmarks!!
I think I said “holy cow!” 5x reading this post!!!!🤣 this is spectacular! I’m in awe of how perfect these carvings are…And the size… HOLY COW!
Our country is and has been so blessed- thank you for sharing this reminder with the faces of men who paved the way and stood firm.
Safe travels and I’m eagerly awaiting the cliff hanger post!! 💕
You are right about the size of the carvings and the majesty of it all – so patriotic too!
Wow! What amazing pictures!!! I visited there when I was a child and I can still remember how majestic that part of the country is. What a God given talent those people have who do that work!!
I agree about the talent to do that carving! and the COURAGE to hang off of a mountain to do it!
Wow, wow, wow!!! So very cool! So much fun going on this trip with you!
THANK YOU!!!!

Love y’all! BIG HUGS!!!
We didn’t intend to “match” – mine broke and i had to run into a Walgreens last week and grab some! didn’t notice the similarity til i got near Leonard! haha
Wow! Amazing pictures! Thank you for sharing!
Isn’t that the most amazing place for so many reasons! So glad it was part of your travel itinerary. It’s definitely a must see! Sorry that the wildfire smoke reached down from Canada. I hope it didn’t impact you too much. It was bad for our last two days in Canada. Calgary had the “worst air quality in the world” the two days we were there. Wishing you clear skies for the rest of your trip!❤️
it’s so weird because I had NO idea about the fires/air quality in Canada – who knew?!
That was AWESOME! Mt. Rushmore is on my bucket list!
You need to go – it’s spectacular!
