I’m back!!! Time to tell you about the crazy, exciting and a little scary thing we did after our visit to Crazy Horse! But first we had lunch at a beautiful lake called Sylvan Lake – it had picnic areas and was just spectacular – no words are even necessary to tell how pretty it was – let these photos speak for themselves!
Now …on to the NEEDLES HIGHWAY and the excitement of it—it is 14 miles long and is an amazing drive through forests, trees and granite mountains – the name of the road comes from the needle-like granite formations that “shoot up” from the horizon when you are driving along the highway – wow! It’s a windy and sometimes NARROW road, with sharp curves and steep “drop offs” (ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT LANE WITH THE DROP OFFS TO THE RIGHT AND YOU ARE SITTING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE!)
The first really awesome rock formation we saw is called the NEEDLE’S EYE – because it looks like the eye of a sewing needle – it was created by wind, rain, freezing and thawing!
Right past the formation is a TUNNEL..
you may be thinking…”so, it’s a tunnel Susan – what’s the big deal?”….HERE’S THE BIG DEAL – THE TUNNEL IS 8 FEET WIDE! AND OUR TRUCK, WITH THE MIRRORS TURNED IN, IS 6 FEET 8 INCHES!!! That means we had 7 inches on each side through the tunnel!!!!
We were so excited to go through it – in order to get the best view of it, I climbed up through the sunroof and held my phone up to get a video! I am going to try to put the link right here – not sure it will work! (CLICK ON THE LINK IMG 7575 AND IT SHOULD DOWNLOAD AND PLAY)
Here are some screen shots of it to give you an idea also! (I SURE HOPE THE VIDEO WORKS!)
and by the way, if you think you saw a STAR WARS Storm Trooper in the first picture, you would be right!!! we approached the tunnel to take some pictures and saw him standing there – in full costume and very serious – I’m not sure if he was “guarding” the tunnel or not – but he sure looked official! SO…
I had to capture the moment!!!!
After that tunnel, we went through four more, and one of them even had a view of Mount Rushmore as you came through it! MAGNIFICENT!!!
I hope this post is fun for you to read and see the pictures – we had such fun and felt SO successful making it through that tunnel!!! In fact, this was our “reward” for doing it!
UNTIL NEXT TIME!!!! (next stop is Colter Bay and the Grand Tetons!!)
Thank you all for coming along on our journey!
(P.S. IF YOU CAN’T GET THE VIDEO TO WORK AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT, EMAIL ME AND I WILL SEND IT TO YOU – IT’S AWESOME!)
The video worked perfectly and was so amazing and fun to watch!
I am so thrilled the video worked – thanks for watching it!

Susan, that was amazing!!! Way to go, Leonard! I cannot even imagine driving your big trailer through that tunnel!
Love the scenery pictures too – so spectacular!
It was just the truck, not the trailer – we would be stuck in there if so – can you imagine!!!
The video was amazing! I’m glad you and Leonard are having such a wonderful time and, as I said before, I can’t wait to go in Sept.
i am SO excited that you get to do this in September!!!! I expect pictures too! haha
Is that the eye of the needle the camel goes through 😂😂
What great pictures and video, The tunnel was exciting:)
Now you need a little storm trooper sitting on your dash . How weird was that to see him out there !
Happy trails!
i LOVE that comment about the eye of the needle that a camel has to go through – brilliant!!!!! I think we may get a little storm trooper for the car or a sticker for the trailer!
So-did the Storm Trooper have any words??? SO HILARIOUS!!! & totally not expected! Susan-VERY proud of your calm, steady hand with the camera, & ALSO Leonard’s navigating skills!
