The other part of this trip is with friends who also have Airstream trailers! We met at the Outer Banks and spent five days there – none of us have ever been and we were all excited to see the area and also camp together – I would be happy just staying at the campground all day – walking, cooking outside on the grill, drinking coffee in the morning outside, sitting around a fire at night, etc…it’s the best part! But there are lots of neat things to see and do in the area, so exploring we will go!
We stayed at a campground right on the beach in Cape Hatteras. The great part is that – because it is “out of season” there – we had a great view because there were not very many campers there! But as we pulled in, we saw THREE other Airstream trailers! (We even had one couple come by after we were all settled and ask us if there was an Airstream rally that they didn’t know about! Haha)…We usually see a couple of Airstream trailers but never have there been SIX of us right together! It was fun!

And the bridges that go across to the islands are amazing!
We are used to being on the Gulf side in Tampa, and it sure is different on the Atlantic side! The waves are awesome!
The first full day was a tour of Kitty Hawk and the Wright brothers memorial/museum!! What a great place – the monument is beautiful and it’s a great walk up the hill to see it! The view from up at the top was beautiful also!
As someone who is an anxious flyer, it was fascinating for me to look back and see the first flight and what that looked like! There was a photo in the museum of the plane with one of the Wright brothers laying on the wing as it was taking off! (SEE PHOTO BELOW!) I said to Leonard, “can you imagine if I had to fly on the wing of the airplane?!!!!” I’m thankful for the technology and how far we have come with flying! (And….I’m getting better at it!)
The weather was pretty but SUPER WINDY! The other days we just relaxed and hung around the campground….went shopping…ate lunch at two neat restaurants that were recommended by a friend…enjoyed the scenery….found a coffee shop with a DELICIOUS iced mocha (had it twice!) and just enjoyed being together in a beautiful place!!
THIS PHOTO SHOWS YOU HOW WINDY IT WAS!
The best part for me and Leonard was being back in our trailer! I remember back when we decided to purchase the Airstream…we were a little unsure and wondered what we would do if we didn’t like this camping thing…Leonard said to me, “If we don’t like it, we can sell the trailer and do something else”…
WELL….that won’t be necessary because we both LOVE it – we got so excited that this trip is the beginning of a fun camping year for us! Especially because LEONARD IS RETIRING ON APRIL 22!!!! We will have more time for more trips! He is completing his 38th YEAR teaching at Pitt – so proud of the impact he has made on the lives of college students! CONGRATULATIONS LEONARD!!!
In fact, we are praying about what to do with the trailer in retirement-looking for a way to serve the Lord and minister in different places!
SO…..in June we are going to a rally for an organization called CAMPERS ON MISSION – to check it out and see what it’s about – looking forward to what God will do and how we can be used for HIM in retirement – and IN the trailer! That will be our next trip so I will let you know! MORE TO COME…..
THANK YOU AS ALWAYS FOR COMING ALONG WITH US!
UNTIL NEXT TIME….
Lookin’ Good, Kids!!! Enjoy!
