I am writing this post about Santa Fe, NM and Amarillo, TX from our campsite in TENNESSEE!! We are now in Nashville and have a beautiful campsite on a lake – we had to change our route back, and decided to come through Nashville, and are SO blessed to have found this campsite….
SO….even though I’m in Tennessee, let me tell you and show you a little about Santa Fe and Amarillo!!!
We had never been to Santa Fe and had NO idea what to expect. We only had one full day, and one thing we KNEW we wanted to do – we wanted to have New Mexico Mexican food! So we went to a restaurant called Tomasita’s and let me tell you – it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is what we had….
Leonard had Enchiladas and I had Chalupas – and with the meal we got SOPAIPILLAS!!!! Those are the HUGE friend pastries in the basket – they come with honey butter and are so delicious! We could only finish part of one because of the huge lunch/dinner we had! That was our one meal for the day!
On the way to lunch, we stopped at the Santa Fe Farmers Market! What a great day it was and we enjoyed strolling outside, looking at all of the vendors at the market – vegetables, coffee, pastries (yes, MORE pastries), homemade bread, candles, and just about anything else you can think of!
We had the rest of the afternoon that day, so we headed over to Bandelier National Monument – we had met some wonderful fellow Airstream-ers at our campground and they told us it was a great place – to see what it was all about! After a beautiful drive over to Bandelier we hopped on board a shuttle bus to the monument – what a neat place to go!!! It is a 33,677 acre US National Monument near Los Alamos, NM – it preserves the homes and territory of the Ancestral Pueblo people – Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, are still there and you can actually climb ladders and look inside! The Pueblo people lived here from about 1100-1550 AD and this amazing monument still shows their handiwork!
What a great day we had in Santa Fe!!! Finished it off by visiting San Miguel Church (the oldest church structure in the US)
. and then went to the Kakawa Chocolate House!!!
I didn’t get a picture of the beautiful chocolates in this shop because I was so enthralled with the HOT CHOCOLATE that we sampled and then BOUGHT!
IT WAS A GREAT DAY AND WE ARE SO GLAD WE VISITED SANTA FE!!!!
The next day we had about a six-hour drive to Amarillo, TX where we were just spending a quick night there on our way to Nashville…We had an awesome thing happen to us at the campground – after having dinner, we decided to walk around the campground (we LOVE to see all the different trailers and motor homes that are out there! – there are some BIG ones!) – as we started our walk, we saw a couple sitting outside of their motorhome – we walked by and waved hello and they asked us if we were the ones in the Airstream (we were just a couple of sites apart) – so we walked over and began chatting with them – we kept talking and then went in their motorhome to see it – it was BEAUTIFUL – we ended up sitting and visiting with them for an hour – they are CHRISTIANS!!! We have so much in common and enjoyed visiting with them so much – we talked until almost 10:00 that night, and then exchanged information and plan to see them again sometime!!!! What wonderful new friends, and we decided that it was a GOD ORDAINED appointment for all of us!!! What a great ending to that long day!
I think that’s enough for today – hope I didn’t “ramble” too much – there is SO much I could tell you all – every stop on our way out to California and so far on our way back has been GREAT – we have seen so many wonderful things and met such nice people!
We have a couple more stops – Nashville, Alabama, Navarre Beach Florida, and then on “home” – I’ll just post one more as we head on in to Florida – thanks for ‘”coming along” so far!
Thanks Susan. Your pictures and travelogue is so interesting. Hopefully I’ll make my way on some of your trails. Your are truly blessed. And getting to meet other Jesus followers is really a big blessing.. God is so good

I’m realizing how much more you can see and experience when you travel on your own as opposed to a bus tour. Your trip sounds so amazing.
You’re right! It’s been so fun to pick a place to go and then see how cool it is!
I don’t know about anyone else but you have seriously put my brain on overload! ha ha. I cannot fully comprehend/appreciate/absorb all the totally amazing places you have been and the breathtaking natural wonders you have seen. Any ONE stop on your travels would have been a full vacation for me! Thank you for sharing all the beauty (including those adorable kiddos) and fascinating places. Maybe some day I will do a travel blog about my trips to Reading, PA. Be prepared to have your mind blown! hahahaha Thanks again for sharing…. 😀
